How to Cook the Perfect Steak: A Step-by-Step Guide

There’s nothing like a perfectly cooked steak. With its juicy, tender meat and rich, savory flavor, it’s no wonder that steak is a favorite dish for many. Cooking a steak may seem like a daunting task, but with the right techniques and tools, anyone can create a delicious steak in their own kitchen. Here’s how to cook the perfect steak.

Ingredients:

  • 1 steak (preferably ribeye or striploin)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Butter
  • Garlic (optional)
  • Thyme (optional)
  • Rosemary (optional)

Equipment:

  • Cast iron skillet or grill pan
  • Tongs
  • Instant-read thermometer

Step 1: Take the steak out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before cooking. This allows the steak to come to room temperature and ensures that it cooks evenly.

Step 2: Season the steak generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of salt, as it helps to bring out the flavor of the meat.

Step 3: Preheat your cast iron skillet or grill pan over high heat for at least 5 minutes. You want the pan to be extremely hot before adding the steak.

Step 4: Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the pan and swirl it around to coat the bottom. If using garlic, thyme, or rosemary, add them to the pan at this time.

Step 5: Carefully place the steak in the pan using tongs. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes on one side without moving it. This will create a nice crust on the steak.

Step 6: Flip the steak over using the tongs and let it cook for another 3-4 minutes on the other side.

Step 7: Check the temperature of the steak using an instant-read thermometer. For medium-rare, the temperature should read 130-135°F (54-57°C); for medium, the temperature should read 140-145°F (60-63°C).

Step 8: Remove the steak from the pan and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more tender and flavorful steak.

Step 9: If desired, add a tablespoon of butter to the pan and swirl it around until it’s melted and foamy. This creates a delicious sauce that you can drizzle over the steak before serving.

Step 10: Serve the steak with your favorite sides, such as roasted vegetables or mashed potatoes.

Cooking the perfect steak may take some practice, but with these tips and techniques, you can create a delicious meal that will impress your family and friends.
